One-of-a-kind

EDGE Amsterdam West is a unique architectural wonder in its own right. Nationally acclaimed, it is no wonder that the building has been nominated for the Herengracht Industrie Prijs 2024 and Office Building of the Year of the Architectenweb Awards 2022.

Facts
This pioneering office building has been reimagined for the future while honouring its past.

Originally conceived by Oyevaar, Stolle & van Gool, EDGE Amsterdam West’s visionary office design from the 1970s with its open floor concept and the solidity of construction and materials, enabled it to be transformed into a future-proof office in 2022. Designed by the same architects in the 1970s (then Oyevaar, Stolle & van Gool), the original building was one of the first offices in the urban development of the area. To ensure a continued connection to the project’s history, Edge retains the building’s original design, while upgrading it to become future–proof in every aspect.

At the heart of EDGE Amsterdam West lies a breathtaking atrium, bathed in natural light and buzzing with energy.

EDGE Amsterdam West’s well-designed atrium welcomes daylight into the centre of the building through a large glass dome. With a span of 76m, it is the second-largest glass dome in Europe. This atrium forms the beating heart and active core of the building, a space that every visitor will admire and be inspired by. It is the building’s central meeting place with plenty of functional space, a green urban oasis that connects the landscape design with the interior of the building and where tenants and visitors are welcome to connect, relax and re-energise.

EDGE Amsterdam West is a pioneering energy-positive development.

Featuring over 6,000 sqm of solar panels and underground thermal energy storage, the building's energy demand is projected to be far below the Paris Agreement compliance thresholds. Its distinctive octagonal dome forms a grid of triangles with radials where 40 DucoGrille NightVents are integrated into this structure. These serve dual roles: on-demand ventilation and summer night cooling. When fully open, they can ventilate 106,000 m³/h of air. This airflow is about 470 times that of an average home. Earning both WELL Platinum and BREEAM Outstanding certificates, EDGE Amsterdam West ensures that this project is a leader for the construction projects of the future.

The dome

While the initial building design involved minimal interaction with the external environment and natural light, the refurbished atrium now ushers in sunlight through a large glass dome ceiling into the core of the structure. This modification has preserved the unique open ring structure of the office building, and the previously vacant core is now reintegrated into the organisation.

History & Design

The original building, one of the first offices in the area, was designed by Oyevaar, Stolle & van Gool in the 1970s. EDGE preserves its historic design while modernizing it with a green atrium, open staircases, and bright office floors of around 6,700 sq m LFA, enhancing its character and future functionality.
