National monument

Sustainably preserving the Ambachtsschool structure, dsm-firmenich's new headquarters meet the highest standards of environmental performance, inaugurated by Queen Maxima herself.

Facts
dsm-firmenich preserves the past while embracing the future.

The dsm-firmenich headquarters carefully conserves the neo-Renaissance exterior of the early 20th century Ambachtsschool building, where the old building structure with high classrooms, corridors and main staircases were preserved with additional smart, modernistic touches. More distinctively, dsm-firmenich’s refurbishment's focus lies on the renovation and unification of the historic monument the Ambachtsschool and the Euroscoop Cinema building. The project also includes the incorporation of open spaces, biophilic design and a roof terrace, naturally combining old and new features.

The building is the first Dutch national monument set to become Paris-Proof.

Reflecting their commitment to sustainability, dsm-firmenich preserves its historic structure while adding a modernistic sustainable touch. The building features excellent insulation, efficient HVAC systems, solar energy generation with PV panels on the roof, coloured solar panels in the façade and solar cells in the glass atrium. It also incorporates smart lighting and comprehensive energy monitoring. Water-saving measures include efficient fixtures and innovative rainwater management. Ensuring a holistic approach to sustainability that minimises long-term environmental impact, the refurbished building aims to gain the highest sustainability certification, BREEAM Outstanding for its energy efficiency.

The building nurtures nature and empowers employees.

The new headquarters of dsm-firmenich features a bright, open and healthy working environment designed for hybrid work patterns. It incorporates biophilic elements for a completely natural feel, such as natural lighting, lush greenery, and outdoor spaces that promote employee well-being. Additionally, the preservation of the time-honoured staircases from the former structure serves as a visually prominent and attractive feature. This intentional design is meant to invite tenants to choose a healthier and more active option over using elevators.

Refurbishment

Renowned for optimal material reuse, the preserved structure connects to a new three-story office with a striking glass atrium in dsm-firmenich’s refurbishment. Historic details are retained, restoring its grandeur and atmosphere. Its Maastricht location, between the river and central station, highlights the region’s historic link as the birthplace of dsm-firmenich.
